Finding your compass: Leading through uncertainty
Virtual BC Health Leaders Conference 2020 - Announcement
The safety and security of our members, event attendees, staff, volunteers, sponsors and partners are a top priority. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) has been actively monitoring the advice of public health authorities and our events have been assessed, cancelled or postponed accordingly.
Given the guidelines on mass gatherings of over 50 people by the BC Government, we have decided to pursue an online format for the 2020 BC Health Leaders Conference (BCHLC). While the circumstances are preventing us from having a face to face conference, our new virtual format will allow us to explore this year’s theme Finding your compass: Leading through uncertainty with a wide Canadian audience.
Featuring keynote speakers and abstract presentations, the online 2020 BCHLC will be a two day virtual conference held on October 29 and 30, 2020. More details will be announced shortly.
We would like to thank all the dedicated CCHL members, health workers, industry partners, and leaders who are actively working diligently to manage the COVID-19 pandemic.
Innovative leadership is the ability to both think and influence others to create “new and better” ideas to move towards positive results. Innovative leaders inspire their teams to be creative in finding and navigating effective solutions to today’s complex challenges in healthcare, which seem to be increasing by the minute. These challenges can include, but are not limited to, the rising complexity of technology and healthcare’s struggle to keep up, dwindling resources and staffing shortages, new human resources complexities arising from a four-generation workforce, and the urgency of ensuring environmental sustainability, and of course, the ongoing fiscal constraints.
In today’s healthcare industry, leaders must navigate through challenging and complex situations on a daily basis. Finding out how to get from “point A” to “point B” is rarely, if ever, a straight line. Often, leaders are required to be flexible with their solution trajectory and must adapt to many unplanned changes as they come. Leaders must respond to these changes and revise previous plans to incorporate new innovations in order to overcome challenges while still achieving their goals.
Educator and creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson said, “The role of a creative leader is not to have all the ideas. It’s to create a culture in which everybody will have ideas.”
Innovative leaders create, cultivate, and sustain environments where everyone feels psychologically safe and trust that they can take risks and make mistakes. Creating an environment where everyone’s voice can be heard, and everyone’s perspective can contribute to the outcome is a great way to reach effective solutions.
Attend the 2020 BC Health Leaders Conference to learn how to better navigate the health system challenges that are being faced across the country. Discover how leadership through innovation, creativity, and flexibility can help you find and trust your leadership compass. Explore practices to help guide yourself and others through the issues and opportunities of today’s healthcare industry such as:
- Establishing guiding principles (national framework, teams, etc.);

- Leveraging and inspiring your team;
- Making decisions in times of fiscal constraints;
- Being effective environmental stewards;
