Private Healthcare Strategies within a Universal Healthcare System - Italy Study Tour 2014

DATE: Tuesday, January 20, 2015
PLACE: Webinar
TIME: 12:00 Noon to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time

TOPIC: In September 2014, leaders from the Canadian healthcare system set off to Italy to explore current developments in health services policy and organization of the Italian health system. The tour provided a rich forum for the exchange of information, ideas and experiences between Canadian health leaders and our Italian counterparts. Over the course of five days on the Study Tour, Canadian leaders from the hospital and industry sectors gained an appreciation for the various ways in which private sector strategies were applied within a universal healthcare system.  This presentation will provide a brief overview of the Italian healthcare system, compare and contrast the efficiency of the Italian system versus the Canadian system, and highlight various strategies implemented within privately operated healthcare facilities that provide government funded services while offering a private healthcare option.

SPEAKER: Sean Gehring - Emerging Health Leader Scholarship Recipient - Sponsored by Aramark

Sean Gehring received his Bachelor of Occupational Therapy from Queen’s University in 2005.  He gained his first experience working in the Canadian healthcare system as an occupational therapist in acute care services at the Ottawa Hospital (TOH).  In 2009, he started his MBA at the University of Bradford, while moving into administrative roles at TOH first as a Compensation and Classification Officer and then as a Program Analyst.  Since 2011, he has been Manager of the Specialized Care Stream at the TOH Rehabilitation Centre.  This portfolio is comprised of revenue generating services, traditional ambulatory services and most recently, the Neuromuscular Care Stream.  Sean has also been a strong champion alongside physician leadership in the development of the TOH Pain Centre and TOH International Office.  In addition, Sean has been active in the broader Ottawa community as a board member for both InCommunity and Serenity Renewal for Families, which are supportive housing and addiction counselling organizations, respectively.

Sean expresses sincere thanks to the Canadian College of Health Leaders, Aramark Canada and Emerging Health Leaders Canada for awarding him the 2014 Italy Study Tour scholarship.
